Framer vs Claude Code

Framer or Claude Code for client sites?

Choose Framer when you want to design on a visual canvas and hand the client a site they can edit themselves in its CMS. Choose Claude Code (with a design system like Sonder) when you want an agent to go from the client's current site to a finished, coded, hosted redesign in an afternoon, and you're happy to make changes for them by asking.

Sonder, the website MCP for designers · Updated

Framer's own comparison page describes the two as different layers: a hosted website platform with a canvas and CMS, and a coding agent. That's fair. The real question for a designer is which one a given client site should live in. A third option, an agent with a design system, sits between them.

When Framer wins

  • The client will edit the site every week. A blog, events, a team page that changes. Framer's CMS and on-page editing are built for that, and Sonder has no CMS.
  • You love designing on a canvas. If the design itself is your craft and you want your hands on every frame, Framer is the better tool.
  • Your studio already runs on Framer. Templates, components, a client base used to it: switching costs are real.

When the agent route wins

  • You win work by pitching. Showing a prospect their own site redesigned before they've paid is the strongest pitch there is, and it's hours by hand. With Sonder it's a batch: a list of prospects in, a before and after of each out.
  • You already work in an agent. If Claude Code, Cursor or Codex is open all day, the site is one more conversation, not another app.
  • The site changes rarely and you do the changes. Most small-business sites are like this. Asking “swap the hero photo and add their new opening hours” is quicker than opening an editor.
  • You want the code. Export it on a paid plan and host it anywhere.

Plenty of studios will use both: Framer for the clients who edit their own sites, the agent route for pitches and for the clients who'd rather send an email than log in.

Can Claude work with Framer?

Yes, through MCP plugins in Framer's marketplace, which let Claude edit the Framer project you have open. They're useful if the site is staying in Framer. See the Webflow and Framer MCPs with Claude for what they do and don't do.

Questions

Is Framer AI good enough for client work?

For layouts and components, yes: Wireframer and Workshop speed up work a designer then finishes on the canvas. The design quality still comes from the designer, as it does with any tool.

Can Claude Code make a site as good as Framer?

The code can be, and the hosting can be. The design is what's usually missing. With a designed system to work inside (Sonder's looks, or your own) and a real check pass, yes.

Can my client edit a Sonder site themselves?

Not in a CMS: Sonder doesn't have one. Clients comment on a review link and approve the site; you make changes by asking your agent. If a client needs to edit every week, Framer or Webflow is the better home for that site.

Can I move a Sonder site to my own hosting?

Yes. On any paid plan you can export the code and host it wherever you like.

What does Sonder cost compared with Framer?

Framer charges per site plus editor seats (see framer.com/pricing). Sonder charges per studio: the trial is one client project free, then Solo $39 a month for up to 3 client projects a month, Studio $99 for unlimited projects, Team $299. See pricing.

Try the agent route on one real client.

Sonder's trial covers one client project from pitch to built site, free. If Framer suits that client better, you'll know quickly.
